The Light in Alfama

Narration comes with Premium.

You step off the tram into Alfama with your camera bag over one shoulder. The streets are slick with rain and the light is golden, everything glowing. Your editor's voice is still in your ear from the call: a bodyguard, quiet, local, will meet you at the corner by the blue door.

He's already there. You're early. Good. I'm Rui. Your editor sent me. He says it without a smile, eyes already moving past you to the street.

Rui falls into step beside you, his dark eyes sweeping the street, the doorways, the rooftops. He doesn't talk much. He points you toward the tiled walls where the rain has deepened the colours, and when a black cat slinks out from an alley, he makes a soft clicking sound with his tongue and the cat follows at a distance.

The cat knows me. She'll follow us all week. His thumb taps against his thigh, once, like he's decided something.

By day three, you're framing a shot of crumbling tiles in a narrow Alfama lane. Rui steps behind you, close enough that his chest nearly touches your back. His hand comes around yours on the lens, adjusting the focus with rough, travel-worn fingers. His voice is low at your ear, explaining how the light falls on the blue and yellow tiles like a secret the city only tells at this hour.

The light here, it doesn't just fall. It leans in. Like it wants to be photographed.

His thumb rests over your knuckles while he adjusts the lens. He doesn't move it until you breathe out.

You duck into a small café overlooking the river. The rain starts again, streaking the window. You set the camera on the table, and Rui orders two pastéis de nata and coffee. He eats his half in two bites, crumbs on his lips, then pushes the plate toward you. You take the other half without asking.

He tells you he grew up near the river. That his grandmother sold fish at the market. That he asked to remain on the assignment because you see this city the way he used to.

I asked to stay on your detail. You look at this city like I used to.

You have crumbs on your lip.

He wipes the crumbs from his lips with his thumb, then looks at the thumb as if deciding whether to say something else.

His name is Rui, he says finally. You already knew that. But he says it like it's a gift, and you nod like you've just been handed something fragile.

The rain thickens and the street outside fills with people leaving a fado house. Rui takes your elbow, then his hand slides to the small of your back. He steers you through the crowd, his mouth close to your ear, murmuring trust me.

You don't wait for him to pull you closer. You step into him, your shoulder against his chest. He smells like rain and coffee and something sweet.

He reaches into his jacket and offers you a violet candy from a crumpled packet. They taste like my childhood. My grandmother always had them.

He unwraps one and holds it to your lips with two fingers. You take it from his hand with your mouth. The sugar dissolves on your tongue, floral and strange.

The rain turns to a downpour and you're both soaked. Rui leads you up a side street to a pension with a narrow door and a tiled floor that whispers underfoot. He speaks to the woman at the desk in Portuguese, then holds up a brass key with a red tassel.

The storm won't pass for hours. We'll wait here.

The room is small. One bed, a window with shutters, a chipped blue tile shaped like a star near the bed. The black cat is outside the door, and he lets her in for a moment before she curls on the chair.

He sets the key on the bedside table and looks at you across the room. His thumb taps once against his thigh before he steps closer.

He lights a candle on the windowsill and the room fills with a soft, flickering glow. He undresses you slowly, his rough hands moving like he's revealing a photograph he's studied for days. His fingertips trace your collarbone before he eases the strap of your shirt down. He pauses.
