The cabin ticks like a clock winding down. Somewhere in the wall the wood stove settles, and a small wind finds the crack in the window and turns it into a thin, patient whistle. He sits on the edge of the bed and watches her stand by the table with her coat still on, her back to him. Then she turns, and the candle flame jumps, and he sees that she has been winding the loose thread from his sweater cuff around her finger all evening.

Neither of them mentions it. He decides not to fill the quiet with anything. Better to let it stretch until it becomes the room itself, warm and waiting.

She crosses the floor and stops between his knees. No hello. No excuse. She just looks down at her own finger, where the thread has made a red groove in her skin, and she unwinds it slowly, loop by loop, then presses it back into the weave of his cuff with her thumb. Her hand stays on his wrist after the thread is gone, two fingers resting on his pulse. He wonders if she can feel it speeding up.

Then she reaches past his shoulder to the windowsill and picks up the tin of peppermint balm. The lid is already half off. She dips one finger in and touches it to her lower lip, not looking away from him. She offers the tin. He takes it and does the same, the peppermint sharp and cool on his own lip. Something in the cabin loosens, like a held breath let go.

He pictures it before it happens: her shoulders bare in this light, the candle turning her collarbones into two curved blades of flame. And then she reaches for the hem of his sweater and lifts, slow, the wool dragging up his ribs and over his head. She drops it to the floor. Her palms come down flat on his chest and slide, fingers tracing the long line of his sternum, not asking for anything yet.

His foot finds the mug on the floor and nudges it. It scrapes against the pine. Then he takes her by the waist and lifts her, coat and all, onto the quilt, and settles over her with one knee between her thighs. She unbuttons her own blouse, one button, then the next, watching his face the whole time. The candle shivers and the light spills along her collarbones, exactly the way he imagined.

He slides the blouse off her shoulders and lowers his mouth to her breast. She arches up into him, and her fingers twist into his hair. The peppermint has faded from her lip but it hangs in the air like a promise. Then, so quiet he almost loses it to the whistle at the window, she whispers that she loves him.

He doesn't answer in words. He kisses the hollow of her throat, then the plane of her stomach, moving down, and she lifts her hips so he can ease her trousers off. She reaches sideways without looking and sets the forgotten mug on the table, the chipped rim catching a blink of candlelight. The bed takes his weight. He settles between her legs and enters her slowly, matching the hush beyond the walls. She wraps her legs around his waist and pulls him deeper.

The wood stove gives one last tick, a fingernail on glass, and then the cabin is only their breathing.

She whispers his name. He covers her mouth with his, swallowing it whole.

In the morning the sun comes off the ice hard and white, throwing a blade of light through the crack and across the tangled quilt. She is still asleep, her hand curled around the loose thread of his sweater on the floor beside the bed. He watches the light move over her shoulder and does not move. Not yet. The new year is out there on the lake, bright and unbroken, and for now this is enough.
